I was in the CCF. The only thing it taught me was that corrupt officers get praised for helping their students cheat through RAF exams... I learnt very little about combat to be honest. I did learn how annoying Drill is though.

100% agree with you on the grammar school front. I cannot stand the "elitism is bad" culture, and the push to force more people into higher education than actually need it.

Yes, boredom does seem to have been the overall response of those who viewed it - as well as being appalled by its lack of artistic merit in addition to its lack of scientific or ethical merit. The amusement caused by the various blunderings of the dishonest IDers involved seems to be the only redeeming feature of this feature. But then you're not the intended audience. You'd have to be a stupid, ignorant, paranoid and dishonest fundie to appreciate the film itself.

It has been a year (and a computer change!) since the last (official) emoticon update. A couple of Y13 ones have been pending all that time, waiting for some others to join them:

sofapeek - surely an essential!
drowning
feline - based on bugeyed
possessed - something which has been coming up quite a bit lately.

I do have the full score of The Nutcracker. So I suppose I could try and create a MIDI of that section. It's certainly long out of copyright as a piece of music and my rendition of it would be my rendition. However, it would be a lot of work for what will probably not be a very good quality result (being MIDI).

Coppelia was the other ballet I mentioned to the relevant person. It's about a foolish youth who falls in love with an automata in the form of a beautiful woman which he glimpses through the window of a room full of other clockwork toys. The movement set inside the room has captured the mood of all the ticking mechanical toys quite well but isn't famous enough to appear on compilations or in most people's existing CD collections.

I didn't want to put the school to too much expense on this (since they might not revisit the idea after this term). Nor did I want to break the law (and moral code!) and send them a copy of my stuff when they should be buying their own. However, I've just remembered that I found a site with a way to buy and download just the tracks you wanted even from classical collections. It had the Toy Symphony, so it might have Coppelia too ...

Yes, I listened (and looked) through the relevant Nutcracker sections the other day ("CAUTION! Digital cannons"). But my particular recording doesn't actually have the nutcracker noises on it which I recall from other performances; and that and the toy trumpet and rocking-the-doll parts aren't very easily isolated from the rest of the movement / track.

The majority of the (famous) pieces which then got chosen for the suite are really pretending to be about foreign dances rather than toys. Eg Spanish and Chinese (and not really like the Disney Fantasia version either!).

Some of the music from the nutcracker could also be associated with toys, though perhaps a somewhat lesser connection.

The Toy Symphony (authorship disputed) suddenly occured to me in the middle of the night (approx 3am). That might do as an on-topic item to replace the other classical piece to which they were supposed to be listening (and moving).

I thought of that one (it's 5th on my list) but it's a little grim for 5-6 year olds.

Kididdles is quite a good site for kiddy songs but is possibly a bit American or something (ie it has things I don't know, or which I only came across much later and through external influences, and lacks things I expect it to have).
